Peak Oil Round-up

It’s been ages, once again, since I wrote for this site. I am in the process of finding a group of amazing sustainable Spokane women to share more frequent entries with me. But in the meantime, some quick updates. The co-housing (loose-knit intentional community) is gathering steam. The PUD was approved by the City a few weeks ago and anyone interested in more information can email me at juliet@outtheremonthy.com. I will also try to continue to write about it.

Perusing my usual peak oil websites; the tone seems to be more urgent. I came across a couple of articles tied to food production in post-peak years and one discussing the potential (from Matthew Simmons) that we may have already peaked. The links are below.

There seems to be this ongoing debate as to whether the highly urbanized cities are really the best places to be during a potential peak oil collapse. Chicago, New York, etc. are heavily energy dependent with very little immediate food production. The Ethan Genauer piece says in a dwindling oil supply situation, “35 million Americans and 2 billion people worldwide will suffer chronic hunger,” and 2 million in New York City, where there is very little arable land for food production.

The Gwynne Dyer piece describes the impact of cheap energy on our food production by stating, “The miracle that has fed us for a whole generation now was the Green Revolution: higher-yielding crops that enabled us to almost triple world food production between 1950 and 1990 while increasing the area of farmland by no more than ten percent.”

Here in Spokane, we have Community-Minded Enterprises starting a community garden campaign. Please see our new Go Green Directory for a complete article on this and how to get involved. The community garden idea is fantastic, it builds community while also feeding folks. I would love to see shared urban gardens springing up all over Spokane.

Oh, and more cheery news from James Howard Kunstler (if he didn’t have such a great sense of very-dry humor, he would drive me crazy) fears that a President Obama would be assassinated. Go to http://jameshowardkunstler.typepad.com/clusterfuck_nation/2006/10/enter_barack_ob.html for the full story.

Here are the food articles and peak oil comments:

I read Juliet’s editorial in the new Go Green Directory, and she really hit the nail on the head for me in a number of ways. (And by the way, I read the directory cover-to-cover and loved it) One of the things I’m excited about is the Community Minded Enterprises’ garden project. There’s a friend of mine that I’m going to bug about some raised beds and other spots that are lying fallow on her lot.

I think often about the hurdles that prevent me and my family from “getting greener.” I try not to think about it too much, and just do what I need to do. Sometimes I think the drastic route is the easier: if cars were banned (or the apocalyptic predictions of Kunstler, et. al. come true), I wouldn’t have the fallback of just jumping into the car and would have to make do with bus, bike, or foot. I try to think of who and what I am today, a stay-at-home mom with two kids, and how my decisions can make less of an impact on my little world (and hopefully the larger venue). I’m always scheming, too, to influence others, but I run the danger of hypocrisy as I’m not always as green as I’d like to be: I join the school district nutrition committee to have a voice about the horrendous school lunches and snacks, but occasionally succumb to the call of fast food and, more often, my own addiction to junk carbs and fat; I want to roust apathetic admin at my son’s school to reform the crosswalks since we’ve had some pedestrian injuries, but I sometimes find myself jaywalking with my kids when I’m pressed for time. I send my son to school with a lunch in his “Laptop Lunch” box, to eliminate waste and junk food, and want to get other parents to do the same so we aren’t wrestling with huge piles of empty Capri Sun juice bags and dealing with diabetic 13-year olds. I want to see major political change nationally and locally, but can I find the energy it will take to walk the precincts and do the grass-roots work it currently requires?

My passion is often stronger than my actions, and I keep trying to right that imbalance.

A lot of it is time management; if I plan better, and don’t try to cram so many activities into a day, I can ride my bike down to the store to get the groceries, and forego the car. If I leave early enough, I can walk to the school to pick up my son. That, thankfully, usually happens, but my temper may not always be in check if we’re in a hurry. I’m also working on not committing to so much. That’s hard, though, because so much of what I commit to and want to commit to is part of the change I want, and the duty I want to fulfill as a stay-at-home parent: being there for my kids, and being a home that is welcoming to their friends and the neighborhood.

A good chunk of it, too, is how I take care of myself. If I exercise and feed myself whole, mostly plant foods, I feel better about myself psychologically, emotionally and physically. Then I have much more mental energy to do everything else the way I want to do it – spend more one-on-one time with my 3-year old, plan and prepare wholesome meals, get the laundry and housework done in a timely fashion instead of ad hoc with much bitchiness.

And there’s the fending off of the dark side: the full bowl of Halloween goodies, the capitalistic Christmas crush, the “gateway” glass of red wine that so often leads to excess in other forms of consumption, like the rich cheeses, breads and butter that go so well with it.

There are many times when it seems like it would be so easy – and I do confess to yielding to it sometimes – to do that mainstream housewife thing: buy and fix quick meals with unsustainable production and packaging issues; to hop in the car instead of the aforementioned greener modes of travel; to save some money and get the cheaper, phosphate-laden laundry detergent in the unrecyclable container; to buy regular milk instead of organic because I’m at the local conventional grocery store; to use disposable pull-ups instead of cloth diapers or working harder to encourage potty training; to put the clothes in the dryer instead of hanging them to dry. We’ve made a lot of headway in the last decade, though; most of our purchases of produce and groceries are organic or green; we cook a lot more than we go out; we compost and grow, although I’m nowhere near producing a good chunk of our food; and we try as much as we can to buy local. We’re making some progress in sealing up and heating our old house more cleanly and efficiently.

I wish there weren’t the guilt -- the guilt of not always doing it as green as we can, the self-imposed paranoia of being “watched” by others in my consumption and lifestyle patterns. I just want to quiet that noise, and maybe it does indeed start from within.

It’s a tough road to hoe sometimes.
